An Introduction to Iolite

Iolite most commonly occurs in varying shades of purple. In fact this is how it got its name, which comes from the Greek word ios, meaning violet. This magnesium aluminum silicate can shift hues in varying light, which is known as “pleochroism.”

According to legend, Iolite was used by the Vikings to create glare reducing lenses for sun-navigation, even when it was hidden behind clouds, providing safe passage across the seas.

Iolite is sometimes used as a less expensive substitute for sapphire because of their similar coloring. Iolite, however, is a softer stone and more widely available throughout the world, including India, Madagascar, and even the United States.

Iolite is traditionally used for spiritual growth and development of spiritual gifts, such as scrying and astral projection.
