Petrified Wood

An Introduction to Petrified Wood

Petrified Wood is technically a fossil, formed when the tree is buried by sediment and flooded with silica-rich groundwater. Impurities such as iron, manganese, copper and lithium present in the wood during the fossilising process, lead to the brilliant and varied color of these unusual gemstones.

In most instances, the wood has had its organic matter replaced with opaque chalcedony. Since Jasper is the opaque form of chalcedony, technically petrified wood is jadsperized wood. Occasionally, petrified wood will also have pockets of translucent chalcedony, or agate.
