An Introduction to Prehnite

Prehnite is a translucent, and occasionally even transparent, calcium aluminum silicate with a light green or greenish yellow hue. In China it is sometimes referred to as Grape Jade because of its potyoidal (grape-like) growth pattern and its color similarity to nephrite jade.

Prehnite was discovered in 1788 in South Africa by Colonel Hendrik von Prehn. Colonel Prehn, for whom the stone is named, was a Dutch mineralogist who also served as governor of the Cape of Good Hope colony. Prehnite can be found in China, Australia, and other locations around the world.
